I hadn’t intended to watch the election returns last night, but wound up watching until around midnight. My first interest was to see if the Republicans maintained control of the Senate as I hoped they could ameliorate some of the Supreme Court nominations that Clinton would make if elected. On the possibility that the Senate would be lost, my secondary hope was that Trump would be the winner. Upon waking this morning if find both were achieved and now we can only hope that Trump will as promised nominate someone with the same philosophy as Scalia.
I don’t think that we appreciate the importance of the Court to our future as a country at this time when five people by decree are allowed to impose their personal views without regard to the constitution they swore to uphold. The last two appointed to the Court seem to not believe the US Constitution is the supreme law of the country, but want to use external sources in their decisions. To add a third or fourth person of similar views would be disastrous for our country.
If Trump carries through on his promise and Mitch McConnell can find a bit of backbone, the Court and the constitution will be safe for a few years anyway.
I am real interested to see who Trump plans to nominate for key cabinet posts as that will be an indicator as to what kind of administration he will preside over.
A byproduct of yesterday’s results may be that the Clinton’s will now steal away at some point to their hideout in NY and live out their remaining years on their ill gotten gains. I don’t believe there will be any legal complications for either as I expect a presidential pardon for the pair prior to noon on Jan 20, 2017. With their ability to influence peddle, large donations to the Clinton Foundation will soon begin to piddle out.
